Stomach and Intestinal Ulcers
If the protective lining in your stomach is not functioning properly, stomach acid can cause an ulcer, a sore or hole, in the stomach or first part of the small intestine, the duodenum.
Symptoms of an ulcer vary but may include:
- Abdominal (stomach) pain
- Bloody stools
- Exhaustion
- Feeling full or hungry
- Nausea
- Weight loss
Treatments for ulcers will be determined by your doctor, but most can be treated with medication to reduce acid levels in the stomach. For ulcers which have caused a perforation, a hole in the tissue, surgery may be needed.
Preventative measures against developing ulcers:
- Limiting your consumption of alcohol
- Avoiding tobacco
- Limiting your use of aspirin, ibuprofen and the like
