Woman Delivers Baby in Elevator

June 18, 2015

Pregnant with her second child, Amanda Lumsden of Lakeland, FL, thought she was prepared for the delivery of her baby since she had done this before.  In fact, she was scheduled to be induced at South Florida Baptist Hospital on June 18.  But baby Addison Frances had other plans.

Because she was already registered at the hospital, when she went into labor, Lumsden and her husband, Jeffrey, drove straight to the Emergency Department, where she informed the Registrar, “I need to go upstairs now!”

As Jeanice Lerum, unit secretary, from Labor and Delivery headed downstairs with a wheelchair, Emergency Services Technician Rachel Sandora put Lumsden in a wheelchair and started heading upstairs.  They all met at the elevator and, as the doors closed behind them on their way to Labor and Delivery, nature took its course.  Baby Addison made her entrance – between the second and third levels!

“It was an interesting delivery,” Lumsden said.  Both mother and daughter are doing fine.
