    • Dr. John Schmittner is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation. He completed an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Schmittner then earned his Doctor of Medicine from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He continued his medical education by completing an internal medicine residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He then completed fellowships in advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation from Aurora St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, cardiovascular disease from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska and clinical research from the National Institutes of Health in Baltimore. Dr. Schmittner believes in partnering with patients to approach advanced heart failure in a comprehensive manner that focuses on the patient’s individual needs and beliefs. His clinical interests include mechanical circulatory support, pulmonary hypertension and cardiomyopathies. An accomplished author and researcher, Dr. Schmittner has contributed numerous articles to peer-reviewed publications such as the American Journal of Cardiology, Journal of General Internal Medicine and Annals of Internal Medicine. He is a member of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplants and the Heart Failure Society of America. Dr. Schmittner loves taking care of advanced heart failure patients as he feels a team approach can return to patients and their families their function and quality of life. He is affiliated with Morton Plant Hospital.
