    • Dr. Andrew Sherman is board certified in cardiac and thoracic surgery. He completed his undergraduate studies at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and earned his Doctor of Medicine at Rush University in Chicago, Illinois as the valedictorian of his class. He completed his general surgery residency at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois and was awarded the Harold L. Method Surgical Prize for graduating as the top resident in his surgical class. As part of his residency, he completed a two-year surgical research fellowship at the Feinberg Cardiovascular Research Institute at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine with full funding support from the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education. Dr. Sherman went on to complete a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia where he was selected administrative chief resident. During his medical training, he earned multiple awards and honors for his clinical and research skills. He has authored numerous publications, book chapters, and abstracts, and has presented this work at national meetings throughout the country. He continues to lecture on various topics in his field. Dr. Sherman serves as the chief of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital (SJH) and is a member of SJH Medical Executive Committee. He is also one of the founding members of SJH Multidisciplinary Structural Heart Valve Team performing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and transcatheter mitral valve repair and replacement (TMVR). He serves as the director of SJH Society of Thoracic Surgery Quality Database Committee. He also serves as a member of SJH Heart Institute Steering Committee. Within BayCare Medical Group (BMG), he is a member of the BMG Board of Directors, as well as, a member of BMG’s Physicians Advisory Council. He is also the co-chairman of BMG’s Cardiovascular Service Line Quality Task Force. Within the BayCare Health System, he is co-chairman of the cardiac surgery/structural heart service line and is a member of the BayCare Cardiovascular Steering Committee. Dr. Sherman specializes in beating heart surgery, valvular heart disease including complex mitral valve repair and multi-valve procedures, TAVR, TMVR, complex aortic valve and root disorders, and complex thoracic aortic aneurysm and aortic arch repairs. He is an expert in the field of atrial fibrillation performing and teaching open Maze procedures and minimally invasive approaches to left atrial appendage ligation. Dr. Sherman is the lead surgeon involved with a novel minimally invasive hybrid procedure for the treatment of patients with persistent atrial fibrillation. SJH has been recognized as a Center of Excellence with respect to this procedure and he helps train electrophysiologists and surgeons from across the country. He is a member of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and has been a member of the executive cabinet of the American Heart Association’s Tampa Bay Heart Ball. He continually makes the list of Tampa Magazines Top Doctors and has been voted Tampa’s #1 cardiovascular surgeon for the last several years.
