The Bald Bottom Line

A man who has gone bald on the top of his headLosing hair or going bald is among a man’s biggest fears. Going bald affects your self-esteem, confidence and self-image. The fear is so great that the hair loss prevention and restoration field is almost a $4 billion industry in the United States. Two-thirds of American men experience a significant level of thinning hair by age 35. But what, if anything, can you do to stop going bald or to restore hair?

There are some legitimate things you can do. But don’t go it alone. Consult with a doctor. A dermatologist can help you make the best decision.

Some of the things they might suggest:

  • FDA-approved over-the-counter and prescription medications have shown to help hair regrowth or slow hair loss. These come in the form of pills, topical applications or injectable medicines. Be aware of possible side effects.
  • Hair restoration or hair transplant surgeries have come a long way since the days of hair plugs. Today, hair restorations and transplants look more natural. These are costly; also, be sure to check the credentials of your surgery team.
  • Laser combs don’t use drugs or surgery. These low-level lasers stimulate hair follicles and promote healthy hair growth. Some laser combs have received FDA approval.
  • Natural supplements called “nutraceuticals” use drug-free ingredients to battle hair loss. The leading natural supplements, however, have yet to receive FDA approval.

Be wary of some alternative hair loss remedies. There are many products including minerals, extracts and shampoos that make big promises but do little. Although they aren’t FDA-approved, they claim to work like FDA-approved products and usually are a lot cheaper. The FDA stamp of approval is important. Make sure you look for it.

Bald Is Beautiful

Just go with the flow. Given the drawbacks of medicine, surgery and technology, some men go with simple acceptance. Your barber can do things to maximize your hair or they can trim your hair to a mod, short style to accentuate the hair you do have. Or, just shave your head completely. Shaved heads are trendy for a reason; many men look great completely bald.
