2023: An Incredible Year for BayCare

December 20, 2023
BayCare President and CEO Stephanie Conners looks back on some of BayCare's highlights from the past 12 months.

BayCare Health System, dedicated to serving West Central Florida’s health, grew bigger and better in 2023 to serve the region. The not-for-profit health system expanded its footprint, enhanced investments in facilities and services and announced plans to continue to grow with the region. It was all done with one thing in mind: the health and well-being of its communities.

Some of the highlights include:

  • In March, BayCare opened the doors to its 16th hospital, BayCare Hospital Wesley Chapel, a state-of-the-art facility serving patients in Pasco County. It is the first hospital to boast BayCare in its name and is home to an emergency department, intensive care unit, along with both diagnostic and surgical services.

  • In October, BayCare announced it would build a new facility for  St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa. The investment means BayCare, already a leader in serving pediatric patients in the region, will further enhance the region’s access to high-quality, state-of-the-art pediatric health care.
  • BayCare will soon open the region’s first proton therapy center, which will deliver precise radiation treatments to cancerous tumors. The center is expected to open by 2025 and will be housed at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.
  • BayCare’s longstanding commitment as the region’s largest provider of behavioral health services grew deeper as it assumed ownership of Northside Behavioral Health Center

Three years following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, BayCare recovered to create new jobs and facilities while expanding its reach in underserved areas. A recently released economic impact report by both the Washington Economics Group and BayCare shows the health system’s impact on the region’s economy has grown by 17% since 2020. BayCare has a $10 billion annual impact on Florida’s economy.
