Women Centered Cancer Care at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital
St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital offers cancer care for patients across Tampa Bay. With a focus on women’s health, our oncology services specialize in:
- Breast cancer
- Cervical cancer
- Endometrial cancer
- Gynecological Cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Genetic Testing and Counseling
Our nationally accredited Shimberg Breast Center provides 3-D mammography, breast MRI and ultrasound services, as well as comprehensive biopsy procedures. We focus on prevention and early detection through screening and diagnostic mammograms and offer free support services for cancer patients and their families.
Surgery is the most common treatment for cancer, with approximately 60 percent of cancer patients undergoing surgery, either by itself or in conjunction with other treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Surgery can be used for diagnostic and staging purposes, as well as for treatment and reconstruction.
Breast Cancer
St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, along with BayCare Outpatient Imaging, can provide total breast care from screening and diagnosis through surgery, treatment and survivorship. Our team of board-certified radiologists focus on reading breast images while our credentialed surgeons offer options from breast conservation to mastectomy and reconstruction. We provide advanced evaluation and treatment of breast cancer including 3-D mammography, ultrasound, MRI, radiation therapy, accelerated partial breast irradiation, chemotherapy and hormone therapy. Our medical oncologists customize treatment programs specifically for your diagnosis and plan of care. High-risk breast cancer assessment services are available, as well as a variety of national clinical trials for breast cancer treatment. We also offer support services for cancer patients and their families through the St. Joseph’s Hospital Cancer Institute.

Cervical Cancer
Like breast cancer and other cancers, early detection is an integral part of effective treatment for cervical cancer. Talk to your doctor about screening recommendations based on your age and risk factors. Having a family history of cervical cancer, using certain contraceptives or having an STD may increase your chances of developing cervical cancer.
St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital offers a variety of innovative procedures to treat cervical cancer, including robotic-assisted and laparoscopic hysterectomy, laser oncology surgery and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.
Endometrial Cancer
The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 66,200 new cases of endometrial cancer, or uterine cancer, are diagnosed in the United States annually. Cancer that begins in the cervix can metastasize and spread to the uterus.
In addition to diagnostic testing and screening procedures such as endometrial biopsy, Pap test, pelvic exam and hysteroscopy, St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital offers the following surgical therapies:
- Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy
- Endometrial cancer surgery
- Hysterectomy
- Laparoscopic lymph node sampling
- Laparoscopic-assisted radical vaginal hysterectomy
- Pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection
- Robotic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy
Gynecological Cancer
Gynecological cancer manifests in many different forms: ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar, vaginal or tubal. The human papillomavirus (HPV), which blocks normal gene function, causes almost all cervical cancers and some cancers of the vagina and vulva. St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital and the St. Joseph’s Hospital Cancer Institute offer a variety of genetic, supportive, medical and surgical programs geared toward the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oncology issues in women. Medical, pastoral and palliative care team members work together to provide a comprehensive approach in helping patients and families cope with cancer.
Ovarian Cancer
The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 19,710 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed in the United States annually. Having a family history of ovarian cancer, being over age 40 or taking estrogen or hormone therapy may increase your risk.
The most common procedures offered at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital for the treatment of ovarian cancer include:
- Hysterectomy
- Omentectomy
- Oophorectomy
- Ovarian cyst removal
Genetic Testing and Counseling
Genetic testing is the study of DNA, a blueprint found in each cell that instructs the body on how to make certain proteins. This blueprint not only determines what traits will get passed from a parent to a child, but also determines what diseases may be inherited. Some genes change or mutate, and these mutations are replicated and passed on. By studying genes andidentifying patterns of mutations, we can learn how certain diseases are inherited or acquired, how they progress, how we can better treat them and even how we might be able to prevent them from spreading. We offer on-site genetic testing and counseling, and can help you and your family understand what testing involves, what the risks might be and the meaning of your results.
