The endocrine system is a complex network of glands that produce hormones, controlling everything from metabolism to sleep to digestion. When a disorder affects any component of the endocrine system, the entire body can be affected due to hormone imbalances.
Endocrine disorders can have a variety of causes but are usually triggered due to overproduction or underproduction of a hormone, a tumor that has developed in one of the glands of the endocrine system, or a genetic disorder. Diabetes is one of the most common endocrine disorders, which occurs when the pancreas (not part of the endocrine system) stops producing insulin; the elevated blood glucose levels then cause glandular problems and hormone imbalances that can lead to weight loss, fatigue, hunger, and excessive thirst.
