Mission Statement

The purpose of the Winter Haven Hospital PGY1 residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy resident training.


The adult pharmacy residency is designed to provide 12 months of training in pharmacy practice with the primary goal of producing general practitioners capable of providing pharmaceutical care to hospitalized patients. The resident will have the opportunity to work with the medical staff to assure rational prescribing of medications, work with patients to enhance their knowledge of the medications they receive, and partner with the healthcare team to improve the overall safety of medication use. The resident will complete one month of orientation to the hospital and pharmacy department. After completing 6 core rotations, the resident will select elective rotations based on their specific areas on interest. The length and design of each rotation is flexible to allow a customized experience for each resident.

  • Critical care (medical ICU, surgical ICU, cardiac ICU)
  • Internal medicine
  • Practice management
  • Therapeutic policy
  • Cardiology (acute care as well as outpatient Heart Failure Clinic)

Elective Rotations:

  • Emergency medicine
  • Infectious disease
  • Oncology
  • Informatics
  • Hospitalist 

Longitudinal Experiences:

  • Research project
  • Heart Failure Clinic
  • Pharmacy staffing 
  • Pharmacy student precepting
  • Pharmacokinetics
  • Warfarin dosing and monitoring 

Special Requirements for Acceptance

  • Submit completed applications to the ASHP
  • Letter(s) – of interest with career objectives 
  • Three recommendations using the forms provided in PhORCAS
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Official transcript
  • Applicants must participate in the matching process
  • Applicants must possess PharmD from an ACPE Accredited College of Pharmacy
  • Onsite interview
