Safety and Health Programs Exclusively for Kids

The following programs aim to improve the health and safety of the community as a whole by providing individual families and organizations with the tools they need to achieve a higher standard of health and safety.

Safe Kids Greater Tampa Coalition

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is the lead organization for the Safe Kids Greater Tampa Coalition. Safe Kids Greater Tampa leads the Tampa Bay community in preventing childhood injuries in the areas of bicycle, pedestrian, water and child passenger safety programs.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program

Safe Routes to School Walk & Roll Safety Program is a comprehensive bike and pedestrian safety program offered to elementary and middle schools throughout Hillsborough County. Participating students learn the rules of the road through hands-on educational experiences including our traffic skills course and school assemblies.

Child Passenger Safety Program

Our certified child passenger safety technicians offer a variety of opportunities for parents and caregivers to learn how to properly use and install child safety seats. To have your car seat checked by a certified technician please register at or call the Children’s Wellness and Safety Center at 813 615-0589.

Water Safety Program

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is the lead agency for the Hillsborough Water Safety Team. Our Mission is to prevent childhood drowning and near drowning through public awareness, education and outreach by collaboration, and coordination of community resources. Our focus includes access to swim lessons and CPR certification, 4-sided fencing around pools, door alarms, and active supervision of children inside the home and in and around all bodies of water. CPR scholarships for families in need are often available through our water safety program.

The Safety Store at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital

The Safety Store is the first hospital-based safety store providing low-cost safety products and personalized safety education in the state of Florida. Families in Tampa Bay now visit St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital for more than medical care. Located on the third floor of St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Medical Arts Building, The Safety Store provides a comfortable environment for families to learn about and shop for injury prevention products and ask questions about how to keep children safe.

Mobile Medical Clinic

The mobile medical clinic is a 40-foot bus that provides well-child care to children in Hillsborough County who are enrolled in Medicaid, do not have insurance, or are Native American or Alaskan Natives. The clinic’s main purpose is to provide immunizations and well-child physicals required for children to attend school and day care. Additionally, clinic staff works with the families of patients to help them establish a medical home and enroll in a health care program.

Developmental Screenings

Research demonstrates that developmental and social-emotional delays can be subtle and can occur in children who appear to be developing normally. Most children who would benefit from early intervention are not identified until after they start school. The Children’s Wellness and Safety Center offers a developmental screening and monitoring program for children newborn to age 5 that encourages parent-child bonding and seeks to identify developmental delays early.
