Post Graduate Year One

Post Graduate Year One

South Florida Baptist Hospital’s Post-Graduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Program is a brand new program accepting its first resident for the 2016-2017 residency year.  Our 12-month program is currently in ASHP pre-accreditation status seeking full accreditation upon the graduation of our first residency class. Our institution partners with other BayCare Health System hospitals across the Tampa Bay area to provide residents an educational experience in a wide variety of settings. Practice areas include pain & palliative care, hematology/oncology, cardiology, critical care, infectious diseases, nutritional support, emergency medicine, pharmacy administration, internal medicine, pediatrics, and therapeutic policy.

We currently offer one position for a PGY1 resident, but are looking to expand our residency program in the years to come.  Our PGY1 residency program strives to provide extensive training and development in many aspects of acute care. The resident will spend one month orienting to the hospital and Department of Pharmacy. After completing six core rotations, the resident will select elective rotations to complete the program. The residency program is committed to providing a customized experience, thereby allowing flexibility in the design and length of rotation experiences.

The PGY1 residency program core rotations include:

  • Orientation month
  • Internal Medicine
  • Critical Care
  • Practice Management
  • Pain and Palliative Care
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Project Month

Longitudinal Experiences:

  • Ambulatory Care (CHF clinic)
  • Education/Teaching
  • Medication Safety/Quality
  • Nursing collaboration
  • Research

Elective rotations may include:

  • Internal Medicine II
  • Infectious Diseases II
  • Critical Care II
  • Pain/Agitation/Delirium in the ICU
  • Acute Care Cardiology
  • Informatics
  • Pediatrics
  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Psychiatry
  • Open to innovative electives or opportunities at other BayCare facilities

The resident will function as an integral part of the department's patient care services. These responsibilities include the provision of pharmaceutical care, patient education within inpatient and outpatient settings, and collaboration with preceptors in the education of pharmacy students, committee membership, medication safety initiatives, and operational activities.

We are dedicated to the development and training of pharmacy residents and our program aspires to develop residents both clinically and professionally into quality practitioners.

The resident is expected to complete various projects throughout the year including, but not limited to, formal lectures, in-services, a medication use evaluation, formulary monographs, and complete a research project to be presented at the Florida Residency Conference. The resident will also assist with teaching fourth year pharmacy rotation students from three affiliated Colleges of Pharmacy.
