Kidney Pain Treatment

Your kidneys are located on both sides of your upper abdomen against the back muscles. The kidneys play an important role in regulating the amount of excess waste and fluid that the body removes.

They can also produce hormones that stimulate the production of red blood cells, which help control a wide range of processes within the body. 

Pain caused by the kidneys (also known as renal pain) tends to be sharp and severe, often occurring in waves. Some people may experience:

• Blood in the urine
• Fever
• Nausea
• Painful urination
• Vomiting

Typically, acute renal pain means some kind of infection, inflammation or injury. Causes of kidney pain can be associated with the following disorders:

• Blood clots
• Chronic use of drugs like ibuprofen or acetaminophen
• Kidney cancer
• Kidney infection
• Kidney stones
• Urinary tract infection

To find the exact cause of your kidney pain, a physician will need to run a series of tests. Diagnostic testing for kidney pain can include urine tests and/or ultrasound or CT scan to help locate the source of the kidney pain and prescribe the correct treatment.
