Sleep Disorder Risk Factors

At BayCare Health System, we are committed to educating people throughout the Tampa Bay area about common health issues like sleep disorders. There are a variety of sleep disorder risk factors that could impact the quality of sleep you’re getting. Knowing if you are at an increased risk for these conditions can help you monitor your sleeping habits and ensure that you are getting the best quality sleep possible.

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders. While it is natural to have the occasional restless night, chronic insomnia can affect your overall physical and mental health. Risk factors of insomnia include:

  • Being female
  • Being over the age of 60
  • Having depression or anxiety
  • Frequently travelling long distances
  • Being under a great deal of stress
  • Working night shifts

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that involves frequent interruptions in breathing. Loud snoring may be an indication of sleep apnea. Risk factors include:

  • Being male
  • Being over the age of 40
  • Being overweight
  • Having a family history of sleep apnea
  • Having a neck size of 17 inches or greater
  • Having chronic sinus problems or a deviated septum
