Thyroid Ultrasound

The thyroid gland is inside the front of the lower neck. The gland assists with making sure the body maintains a proper metabolism. A thyroid ultrasound looks at this gland. A gel that helps with the transmission of sound waves is put on the neck. A hand-held device is moved across the area. The device transmits sound waves from the thyroid gland. The sound waves make an image visible on a computer. Thyroid ultrasounds are done when there is a growth on the thyroid or when an enlarged thyroid is suspected. The ultrasound can reveal a fluid-filled cyst or a tumor.
