Stage III Fontan Procedure

Stage III (Fontan Procedure)

The stage III Fontan procedure is the third staged surgery for hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) or similar heart defects. HLHS is a congenital heart defect where parts of the left side of the heart do not fully develop.

The stage III Fontan procedure is typically done from 2 to 4 years of age. The procedure connects vessels that return blood from the lower body to the lungs. The heart, with one ventricle, pumps blood to the body and blood from the heart goes straight to the lungs.
