Middle Ear Muscle Reflex MMR Test or Acoustic Reflex Test

Middle Ear Muscle Reflex (MMR) Test or Acoustic Reflex Test

The middle ear muscle reflex (MMR) evaluates how the ear responds to sounds. In a healthy ear, sounds cause a reflex and a contraction of the muscles in the middle ear. In an MMR test, a soft rubber tip is inserted in the ear canal. Sounds are sent through the tips into ears and a device measures whether the sound has caused a reflex. The test can be done while the child is sleeping or awake.
