Dilation and Curettage (D&C)

Dilation and curettage (D and C) takes a small sample of tissue from the inside of the uterus. "D" stands for dilation to make the cervix wide enough to allow instruments into the uterus. Dilation is performed under anesthia and special instrument called a speculum and numbing medication is used. "C" stands for currettage, which is the scraping of wall of the uterus to obtain samples. Scraping is done with a curette, a long metal instrument. This procedure is done to evaluate for uterine cancer, menstrual bleeding, irregular periods, tissue and polyp removal and to evaluate a thickened uterus.
