Ulcer Surgery

Although the need for ulcer surgery has decreased dramatically due to the success of medications, surgery is used when medicine fails. Surgery is usually done when the ulcer has a hole and flows into the abdomen. Surgery may also be done to stop excessive bleeding of the ulcer or if the ulcer has scarred or grown so much that it causes a blocked bowel. Ulcer surgery is done in an open or minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure.
