Bernstein Test

A Bernstein test is a procedure to replicate heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux symptoms. It is typically done with other tests to evaluate esophageal function. A cylinder containing a mild acid is placed through the nose into the esophagus. The patient will be asked if they are feeling discomfort or pain during the procedure. If the acid causes pain or discomfort, it is possible that the patient has the conditions of heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux.
