A mastoidectomy is surgery to take out mastoid air cells, cells that are in spaces behind the ear. These cells can be become infected from ear infections. Cysts can also grow in the mastoid area. Infections and cysts necessitate the removal of the mastoid air cells. A mastoidectomy is also sometimes done for the implantation of a cochlear implant, a hearing device that is surgically inserted near the ear.
