Cleft Palate Repair

Cleft lip and cleft palate repair is surgery to correct defects of the upper lip and roof of the mouth (palate) that are present at birth. A cleft lip can range from a small notch in the lip to a complete separation of the lip that extends to the bottom of the nose. Cleft lip repair is typically done when the child is 6 to 12 weeks old. Cleft palate can be on one or both sides of the roof of the mouth and extend along the full length of the palate. A child may have one or both of these disorders at birth. Cleft lip and cleft palate repair are necessary to avoid problems with nursing, feeding or speaking.
