Umbilical Hernia Repair

An umbilical hernia is a pouch extending from the inner belly that forces a hole in the abdominal wall in the area of the belly button. The belly button will protrude unnaturally with an umbilical hernia. An umbilical hernia repair is surgery that separates tissue around the hernia and stops the hernia from protruding. The hernia sac is removed. Umbilical hernia repair is done for children when the hernia is painful, is in a permanent bulging position, has not closed naturally by the age of 5 or 6 or is unsightly. Umbilical hernias are less prevalent in adults although they do occur in obese people and in some women following pregnancy. Surgery is done in adults if the hernia is large, painful and a threat to affect blood supply to the area.
