Paraesophageal Hernia

A paraesophageal hernia is when a large portion of the stomach has moved into the chest. The stomach extends up through an opening in muscle layer separating the chest and belly. The stomach can move and twist in a paraesophageal hernia. The stomach is secured in this surgery by making the opening in the diaphragm smaller or wrapping the bottom of the esophagus.
