Open Esophagectomy

The esophagus is the tube that transports food from the throat to the stomach. An open esophagectomy takes out a portion of the esophagus or the entire esophagus. Esophagectomies are primarily performed in the treatment of esophagus cancer. They are also done when muscles in the esophagus do not function or there is damage to the lining of the esophagus.
