Clinical Breast Exam

A clinical breast exam is performed by a physician or health care professional. Like a self breast exam, a clinical breast exam is designed to check the breast tissue and surrounding lymph nodes for lumps or irregularities. During a clinical breast exam, the physician or health care professional will visually check the breast and surrounding area (including collarbone and underarms) for changes in breast size or skin irregularities (redness, infection, bruises). Then, the physician will gently press the breast tissue to feel for unusual or painful lumps and the nipple area for any discharge. They will also examine the underarm and neck area for swollen glands. This procedure is typically performed in a doctor's office.
