Fine Needle Aspiration

A fine aspiration of the thyroid gland takes a sample of thyroid cells for analysis. A thin needle is inserted in the thyroid, a gland inside the neck, and cells and fluid are taken out. The test looks for signs of cancer or thyroid disease. It is typically done to find out if thyroid nodules found by a health care provider or visible on an ultrasound are cancerous.
