Digital Rectal Examination DRE

Digital Rectal Examination (DRE)

A digital rectal examination, also known as a DRE, is a procedure to check for abnormalities in the lower rectum. A health care provider wears a lubricated glove and places a finger into the rectum. This test can detect bleeding in the digestive tract , check for an enlarged prostate or identify abnormal bumps, growths or changes to the prostate. It is part of a routine physical examination. It is sometimes performed to collect stool for analysis.
