Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer begins in the middle layer of the esophagus, which is the tube that carries food and liquids from the throat to the stomach. The two primary types of esophageal cancer are squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. The first develops in the cells lining the esophagus and the latter develops in the glandular cells of the esophagus. Some esophageal conditions such as Barrett’s esophagus and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause changes in the cells of the esophagus, which could lead to cancer.
