Spina Bifida Procedures

Spinal bifida is a condition where the backbone and spinal canal do not close before birth. Surgery is performed soon after birth to close the opening. Surgery is done to prevent infection and reduce further injury to the child's spinal cord and nerves. Medication, therapy and other surgical treatments may be needed to manage complications throughout a lifetime. Assistive devices such as braces, crutches and wheelchairs are often needed.
