The St. Anthony’s Triathlon is considered to be one of the sport’s leading events in the U.S. Thousands of professional and amateur athletes of all ages and abilities will be in downtown St. Petersburg April 27 – 29, 2018 to attend the two-day Sports and Fitness Expo and compete in one of three events: the Meek & Mighty Triathlon, Sprint Triathlon and the Olympic distance St. Anthony’s Triathlon.

The Olympic distance Triathlon and the Sprint Triathlon will be Sunday, April 29, while the Meek & Mighty Triathlon will be Saturday, April 28, 2018

Unique Participants and Stories:

Entire Yost Family Competes Including Jackie (90) and Larry (88)

The entire Yost family will be competing in this year’s race including Jackie Yost, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, and Larry Yost, age 88. The whole family has a history of swimming and competing, and are looking forward to competing in this year’s race. The family first competed in the St. Anthony’s Triathlon in 1993.

  • Jackie Yost- competing in the sprint triathlon this year.
  • Larry Yost- competing in the sprint triathlon this year.
  • Steve Yost- son to Jackie and Larry, is competing in the sprint relay with his wife, Debbie, and friend
  • Joy Yost Edwards- daughter of Jackie and Larry, is competing with her husband in the sprint relay
  • Cindy Yost Perret- daughter of Jackie and Larry, is competing in the sprint triathlon

Jackie and Larry train every day of the week, except Sunday (Sunday is reserved for golf). The couple just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. The whole family is looking forward to pushing on race day, and then taking a family photo post-race.

Erin Cosgrove

Erin is a well-known singer and actor will be doing double duty before she participates in the Olympic distance event. Erin will be performing at this year’s first-ever concert in Vinoy Park on Friday, April 27 and singing the national anthem at this year’s St. Anthony’s Triathlon Opening Ceremonies on Sunday. In addition, Erin has been participating in the St. Anthony’s Triathlon since the age of 7, starting with the kids race, and began competing in the full distance event at the age of 16.

Sister Madonna Buder “Trains Religiously”


Sister Madonna Buder, also known as the “iron nun,” will be racing at this year’s St. Anthony’s Triathlon. Buder holds the world record for the oldest individual to ever finish an Ironman Triathlon at the age of 82. Buder began training for triathlons at the age of 48 as a way to achieve calmness in both the mind and body in her service as a sister. Since then, she has competed in over 325 triathlons including 45 Ironman distance races.

President of St. Anthony’s Hospital Competing in Olympic Distance



Scott Smith, the President of St. Anthony’s Hospital will be competing in the St. Anthony’s Triathlon in the Olympic distance event. This is Smith’s third time competing in the event.

Local Pro Athlete: Nicholas Chase


            Hometown St. Petersburg pro triathlete, Nicholas Chase, will be competing against the world’s best in this year’s elite race.

Triple Amputee: Rajesh Durbal

            Triple Amputee, Rajesh Durbal, will be competing in this year’s St. Anthony’s Triathlon, on his way to the July 1, 2018 Ironman in Germany. He will be donating 60 care packages to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital on Friday before the race.
