August 10, 2015

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – August 10, 2015 – Winter Haven Women’s Hospital’s new innovative Breast and Imaging Center is now open and scheduling patient appointments.

“Breast health is an important aspect of a woman's overall well-being,” said Becky Comeau, manager of imaging services at Winter Haven Hospital and Winter Haven Women’s Hospital. “We offer women throughout the Polk County area convenient access to the latest breast imaging procedures.”

The Breast and Imaging Center provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging services, including:

A convenient, private entrance for the Breast and Imaging Center is on the northwest side of Winter Haven Women’s Hospital, located at 101 Ave. O S.E., Winter Haven, FL.

The Breast and Imaging Center features new 3-D mammography technology, or breast tomosynthesis, made possible by a $450,000 grant from the Winter Haven Hospital Foundation and the Lewis Family Cancer Fund.

“The Winter Haven Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees is excited about providing this new 3-D mammography technology,” said Joel Thomas, president of the Foundation. “We wish to express our thanks and gratitude to the Lewis Family Cancer Fund for their $100,000 investment in the women of our community.”

The Lewis Family Cancer Fund was founded by brothers Josh and Geoff Lewis within the Givewell Community Foundation after their own personal experiences with cancer.

“We are proud to be part of such a worthwhile and important initiative,” said Josh Lewis. Fighting breast cancer through early detection by using state-of-the-art equipment goes to the heart of the Lewis Family Cancer Fund’s mission. We are honored to have been asked to be a partner.”

Breast tomosynthesis allows radiologists to evaluate breast tissue one layer at a time. This technology may be used in conjunction with traditional digital mammography as part of an annual screening mammogram. Very low X-ray energy is used during the screening examination so your radiation experience is safely below the American College of Radiology (ACR) guidelines.
