The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 23,000 cases of malignant brain or spinal cord tumors are diagnosed in the United States each year. Survival rates for central nervous system (CNS) tumors are largely dependent on the tumor's size and location, in addition to how old you are at the time of diagnosis. Brain tumors tend to be quite different in adults than they are in children. If you have a family history of brain cancer, have been exposed to radiation (due to past cancer treatments) or certain chemicals, or have an immune system disorder, you may be at a higher than average risk of developing a brain tumor. Adult brain cancer is most common in Caucasians.
