Flying Safely

When you fly, particularly on a flight lasting six hours or longer, you can take steps to help avoid developing a blood clot in your legs. According to new guidelines from the American College of Chest Physicians [2004], you should try to move around the plane periodically during the flight, or at the least, stretch and move your calves; drink plenty of fluids, but avoid alcohol and coffee; and don't rely on aspirin to prevent a clot. If you are prone to developing clots, talk to your health care provider before your flight.
