6 Muscle Marvels

  • The stapedius, in your ear, is your smallest muscle -- about one-twentieth of an inch.

  • Fingers contain no muscles; they're moved by muscles in your forearm pulling on tendons in the fingers.

  • Many muscles work without your knowledge. The muscle contractions we call "blinking" take place more than 16,400 times a day.

  • The gluteus maximus -- your buttock -- is your strongest muscle. It moves your thighbone so you can run and jump.

  • A cubic inch of muscle weighs three times more than a cubic inch of fat.

  • The levator palpebrae superioris is one of three tiny muscles that let you open your eyelids.
