Make Sure Your Smoke Alarms Are Working

Smoke alarms are the leading reason that fire deaths in American homes have been reduced by half since the late 1970s, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). But although about 90 percent of U.S. homes have smoke alarms, one-fifth remain unprotected because the alarms have dead, missing or disconnected batteries. You should test your smoke alarms (even the newer long-life alarms) every month to make sure they are working properly.
