Sunburn No-Nos

What not to put on sunburn:

  • Butter or petroleum jelly. Greasy salves can hold heat in the wound and slow healing.

  • Your own concoction. If you're not sure what to do, call your doctor.

  • Abrasive soaps or hot water. Besides adding more heat to sunburn, hot water -- because it leaches out body oils -- is more drying than cold water.

  • Ice. Instead, wrap the ice in a towel and place the towel on your skin.

  • Perfumes or colognes. The chemicals in them can irritate skin that already is hurt.
