Colonoscopy

A colonscopy shows images of the inside of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. A scope is inserted in the anus and advanced into the intestines. Tissue samples can also be obtained through colonoscopies. Colonoscopies are used when there is abdominal pain, bloody or black tarry stools, bowel disease, bowel movement changes, unexplained weight loss, the presence of polyps or to check for colon cancer.
