Thomas Babbino credits an angioplasty with saving his life. "The pain went away the minute (the balloon) cleared the blockage," said the 67-year-old Delta Air Lines retiree. He was rushed 7 miles from his Trinity home to Morton Plant North Bay Hospital when he had a heart attack on Feb. 9. "They're calling me the miracle patient," Babbino said of the hospital, which recently began offering angioplasty, a procedure in which a balloon is inserted up through the groin and into the arteries, which are cleared and then propped open with stents. "I say they are the miracle."

St. Joseph's Hospital-North officially opened Monday. The facility in Lutz is the first new full-service hospital in the Tampa Bay area in 30 years, according to a release from BayCare Health System. A four-month-old baby was given life-saving surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital on Wednesday -- free of charge. The infant, Lionsford Reyes, and his mother, Shamika Smith, traveled to Tampa from Belize for the surgery. A four-hour open-heart surgery was made possible with the combined effort of St. Joseph's Children's Hospital and the Gift of Life program.

The afternoon started with prayers and hymns and verses from the Bible about building a kingdom. Then there was a bit of a roast. Has anyone ever built a house? asked radiologist Thomas Egan. "Can you imagine having eight or nine women of the house telling you how to build it?" he said to a roar. Come fall, the women from the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany will move into a new convent on the grounds of St. Anthony's Hospital, land which clerics blessed at a ceremony Thursday. Their old convent will be torn down to build a state-of-the-art emergency room with 34 private beds.
