What Is Scoliosis Correction?

This surgery is performed to treat scoliosis. It corrects and fuses the vertebrae along the spinal curve. 

Why Is It Done?

When children have scoliosis, they often can wear back braces or receive other treatment to keep the condition from worsening. But there may be times when surgery is required:

• An adult has scoliosis and is in pain, in spite of conservative treatment. 

How to Prepare

Prior to the surgery, you will meet with your doctor so you can ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have. If the surgery is for your child, be sure you understand all the pros and cons. This procedure will stop the growth of that area of the spine. Be sure you follow all pre-operative instructions and restrictions. 

What to Expect

For this procedure, a surgeon makes in incision on your spine. Then he or she uses rods, wires, screws, and hooks to correct the curve and hold the spine in place. That way, it can fuse into the right position as it heals. 

Scoliosis correction is a long and complicated surgery, often taking several hours, and most patients will need to stay in the hospital for nearly a week. However, this procedure is successful 95 percent of the time. Recovery can take several months, with everyday activities resuming gradually.
