POEMR Frequently Asked Questions
Does a physician need to purchase his own server? No. There is an option to have a server of their own, but the return on investment is not favorable until they are more than four practitioners using the system. The upfront costs for the server architecture are very high and require IT consulting.
eClinicalWorks offers hosting called Software as a Service (SAAS) Model. This is a lease of space in their data centers. It is very stable, and most practices are choosing this model for financial reasons.
What if the doctor is not skilled at typing? eClinicalWorks is very menu driven, eliminating the need for a lot of typing. Doctors can also opt to purchase Dragon Medical Voice recognition software to help.
Why can't a doctor purchase his own equipment at Best Buy or use his own IT resources? The POEMR Department approved vendors for support of the hardware assessment and equipment purchasing to meet specifications to run the software efficiently. These vendors secure best business class pricing, and two of them offer financing for the equipment. We will not implement a practice without commitment to use our vendors for hardware support.
*The risk of allowing the practice to use their own IT resources is too great for us to support that model.
Can a doctor finance if she doesn't have liquid cash to fund it? There are options for financing through two hardware vendors, but that does not cover software license costs and IT consulting fees. If a practice wants to finance those items, they can use several banks that have EMR funding programs.

What if the physician already has an EMR? Although it is against the law to subsidize a group with an existing EMR, we can still connect Lab and Radiology interfaces into the EMR. Our Outreach Lab IS department handles those requests.
