What Is Partial Joint Replacement?

This surgery is most often done to reduce joint pain, most often knee pain. It is an alternative to total joint replacement.

Why Is It Done?

Many people can alleviate joint pain through medication and physical therapy, but when those options are not enough, partial joint replacement may be the answer. You may consider it under these circumstances:

  • You have arthritis that is not reacting well to pain relievers.
  • Conventional treatment such as physical therapy has not stopped your pain.
  • You want to avoid total joint replacement if possible.

How to Prepare

Talk to your doctor about all your treatment options, and discuss the pros and cons of partial joint replacement. If you agree on this option, discuss any concerns you have, and be sure to follow pre-operative instructions. You probably will have to fast before the procedure, and you may need to refrain from taking certain medications.

What to Expect

Usually, your surgeon will make just a small incision on your affected joint. Then he or she will use metal or plastic devices to replace only the most damaged parts of your joint. You may go home the same night or you may need to stay overnight. You will likely recover faster than if you have a total joint replacement.  Learn more about our Joint Replacement Surgery Centers.
